Population : 14 200 inhabitants.
Origin of name :
According to the legend , Roman Soldiers called « Château Colombier »
the Tower and the Houses flied over by doves(=colombes in French)
standing in the place where the present Town Hall is.
Specialities : Two different types of cheese are made, which are round and rather flat: a smaller one called «Coulommiers cheese» and a bigger one called « Brie cheese » . Small cakes called « niflettes » are sold only on All Saint Day. The « Roseaux du grand Morin » (= Reeds of the Grand Morin) are chocolate Sweets.
Social services : An important Hospital (550 places), a nursing home, an old people’s home, « Notre Maison » (= Our Home) is a Club for elderly persons.
Schools : Several schools for children of all ages, a High school, a technical High school, an Agricultural High school.
Trades : All the important Banks have a local agency. Market days are Wednesday and Sunday mornings in the center.
